![]() My recent trip home to Philly and NYC was jam-packed with new and delicious vegan food options, from the carrot lox at Orchard Grocer to Philly's amazing new joints Wiz Kid and Goldie. Add in all the incredible new finds at Trader Joe's and I was almost overwhelmed with vegan options, especially considering my dearth of options this past summer in Central Asia! With vegan treats coming at me from all sides, you'd think it would be hard to choose a favorite, but that was the easy part. The new (at least in my book, come on I've been gone forever) outpost of Juice Merchant, an all-vegan 100% organic cafe, on Montgomery Avenue in Narberth wins that honor. (There's also one in Manayunk.) The food, while not Landau-levels of otherworldly perfection, is solidly good, sometimes great; the menu is the exact perfect size for offering tons of options but not being overwhelming (us vegans aren't used to having such choice!); the drinks menu is flawless; the staff is insanely nice; and the desserts - guys - the desserts are from Vegan Treats. Finally a place on the Main Line with a constant supply of that peanut butter mousse! READ IT ALL! ![]() During my latest trip home to Philadelphia, PA (how far are theyyyy), I had just enough time to try two of the city's newest and best lunch-time offerings. Rich Landau's most informal restaurant yet, Wiz Kid, specializes in a few stellar sandwiches in the grand old greasy Philly cheesesteak tradition, but veganized (and so much better). Goldie highlights the street food of another big city, Tel Aviv, with an Israeli-style falafel shop selling, well, just a falafel sandwich or salad, fries (with optional shwarma flavoring!), and the greatest single and singular item in the city right now, which we'll talk about. At the end, I'll share my pretty accurate recipe for that magical item so let's get to it. READ IT ALL! ![]() Philly's best Chinese restaurant is actually the best Chinese restaurant in the country. Important and wise critics actually say that, not just me, and everyone I know who has eaten at Han Dynasty agrees. Offering an authentic, super-spicy Szechuan-based cuisine, it's so far from your usual Chinese restaurant that you probably won't know where to begin. Luckily, I'm here to help. The menu is a favorite of omnivores but there is so much insane food for vegans to eat that I consider this one of my top vegan recommendations for Philly and the surrounding area (they have several outputs in the burbs and in NYC now, so famous). ![]() Before we get into the important food-related stuff, let's acknowledge how difficult it is for me to leave the title like that. But that's actually what this new amazing restaurant is named and how it is written: Charlie was a sinner. With the period. I love it! But even more, I love the place. It's the new all-vegan bar from one of Philly's favorite young restaurateurs, Nicole Marquis of HipCityVeg fame and general wonderingment. Charlie is a swanky, dimly lit, old-Hollywood inspired bar with a creative, upscale menu both for drinks and for small plates. Even early in the run, almost everything I tried was wonderful. ![]() Philadelphia gets more and more vegan-friendly by the day, it seems. In the past year, we've gotten a second outpost of the consistent & incredible HipCityVeg, a new all-vegan bar with upscale small plates called Charlie was a sinner. (review to come tomorrow, and yes, the period is in the name), a new bar from the Landaus of Vedge fame (to open any day now), and much more just in Center City! It's sometimes hard to get out of the center because it seems there's no real need to, with so much delicious vegan food within a few blocks of Rittenhouse. However, South Philly is veganizing as fast as it's gentrifying, and if you can get someone to drive you (not it!), the vegan scene there is unmissable. My favorite new place there? Vegan Commissary! I think it's the best brunch in town. It's only open during lunch hours, but call it brunch so you can also order the cinnabuns. READ IT ALL! ![]() Despite living in Philadelphia since Morimoto opened, I never ate there until after I became vegan. It might seem like unfortunate timing to many, but the vegan options are so wonderful that anyone, vegan or omnivore, would be more than satisfied eating fishless here. I called the restaurant when I was helping The Humane League make the new Philly Veg Dining Guide, and the person I spoke with was so excited to talk about their fantastic vegan options that it warranted inclusion. READ IT ALL! ![]() Philadelphia's Chinatown is packed with vegetarian-friendly restaurants, and while they are uniformly decent, some stand out from the pack. New Harmony is one of those standouts. Specializing in vegetarian mock meats and seafood, as well as insanely good steamed buns and dumplings, this is one of the (very) few non-Szechuan Chinese restaurants I'll go to excitedly. Owned by Ming, the nicest restaurant proprietor this side of anywhere, New Harmony mixes crazy good, greasy comfort food with a casual atmosphere and, on Thursday, a doughnut delivery from Vegan Treats. I know. READ IT ALL! ![]() It's getting ridiculous, Philly! A few years ago, I had to go to NYC if I wanted interesting cold-pressed juice. But now, everywhere I turn there's a new juice bar opening in Philadelphia! As you know, last week I discovered the wonderful Yellow Juice Bar at 20th & Sansom. This week, while spending some time on South Street, I discovered Sip N Glo Juicery, one of my new favorite juiceries. (Is this a word?) Right across from the Whole Foods and next to a few yoga studios, Sip N Glo's location is pretty perfect for their desired kind of foot traffic. I wandered in the first time during the lagging pre-lunch hours, so I was the only customer in the tiny place. The man working was bottling juices while I deliberated, and he let me sample a few. ![]() Local 44 is my JAM, people. It's the coolest, hippest, raddest neighborhood pub in West Philly. Although it can be overrun with hipsters and Penn kids (I can make fun because I was once both), it has interesting craft beer options (not that I drink it), a challenging and awesome Quizzo night (which I rock), and most importantly amazing vegan food options. The menu has changed over the years. I remember a Frito Chili Pie and a good veggie burger. However, I'm solidly behind the latest offerings. Hot damn, they are good! My friend and I started with 2 of the 3 vegan appetizer options, because that's how we roll. First, the Spicy Seitan Nuggets, of which you get 5 decent-sized pieces of amazingness. READ IT ALL! ![]() It's kind of ridiculous how much I love green juice. I'm probably the last person (/vegan blogger) who would tell people to eat something that doesn't taste great just because it's good for you. But guess what? Veggie juice, when done right, is AMAZING. It's like my favorite thing after hummus and Ron Swanson. So how happy am I that a new juice place has opened in Philly? Philly has been screaming for more juice bars, at least in Center City. (At least in my head.) I needs my juice! And with more vendors creating more competition, the prices are getting much more affordable. I'm tired of spending upwards of $10 in the suburbs for a juice that I down in about 9 seconds. (I drink juice fast.) No juice should cost almost a dollar per second! Luckily, the new Yellow Juice Bar, right across from Helium Comedy Club at 2046 Sansom, is not only well-priced but delicious. READ IT ALL! ![]() On Wednesdays throughout MoFo, I'll be reviewing some incredible vegan and vegan-friendly restaurants. Today we are starting with THE BEST in the whole world, Vedge in Philadelphia. As a Philadelphia native, I was lucky enough to eat at Horizons restaurant several times in my life. It was the restaurant I always chose for celebrating a special occasion, but simply going there was a special occasion in itself. The food overall was sublime, the desserts and seitan in particular were just perfection. ![]() When Rich Landau and Kate Jacoby suddenly announced their decision to close Horizons and open a more vegetable-focused restaurant, I was crushed, as was every vegan, vegetarian, Philly person, and anyone who appreciated great food. Luckily for me and my therapist, Vedge Restaurant is, if possible, even better than Horizons. Hurrah! Sure, it is different, and the focus on vegetables leaves little room on the menu for the wondrous things Landau can famously do with seitan, tofu, and tempeh. However, he graciously keeps a few of those dishes in rotation. More importantly, the focus on vegetables will blow your freaking mind. READ IT ALL! |
