Dubrovnik Vegan Scene: Moskar Konoba Restaurant

For me, eating in Dubrovnik was all about Nishta, the one vegetarian restaurant. I went there plenty, so for dinner one night I appeased my boyfriend and we went to a mainly seafood restaurant. I really, really didn't want anymore boiled, oil-logged vegetables, but our waiter promised me that they could make something vegan and delicious. And, lo and behold, they really did!
PictureMmm soup. I mean mmm lentil soup.

To start, I ordered lentil soup, which was promised to be in vegetable broth. You can’t really go wrong with lentil soup, and this one, a mixture of lentil and barley, was pretty good. Like the lentil soup at Sarajevo's Restaurant Karuzo, it was brothier than the lentil soups I'm used to, but this was not a bad thing. After all, regardless of brothiness, lentil soup is still one of the great wonders of the natural world.

For my entrée, our waiter recommended the mushrooms kuza style over vegetable risotto and said it was made entirely without dairy (as risotto should be made, but as we know, rarely is in restaurants).     I don’t know why I loved this dish as much as I did! It was wonderful. So surprising, and so good. The risotto was supremely al dente, which I love. A little chewiness is always welcome in my book. The mushrooms were roasted, a little salty (in a good way) and filled with garlic (I was told that kuza style meant simply this way of preparing them). Mushrooms are one of my favorite foods, and these were delicious. It was such a comforting, lovely dish that I didn’t even care about how little green I was eating. (That is high praise.)

MOSKAR KONOBA, Dubrovnik
  • Water speed: Decent
  • Bathrooms: Fine
  • Service: I’m so thankful to the waiter who helped me out so much!
  • Food: Surprisingly great and vegetarian friendly!
  • Bonus: It’s right on Prijeko street, the main restaurant-stuffed road, so you should be able to find it easily and, like I did, sit outside and people watch.

My wife and I have been here twice already on our honeymoon and are going back again before we fly home. The seafood spaghetti and the steak Adriatic are amazing, the best meal we've had so far. The staff are great and very friendly. We have choosen this one because it was in a more quite neighborhood.

I go out to eat often, in many different cities. I'm usually with a crowd of omnivores, so look here for tips on how to eat vegan at many non-vegan places. But primarily this section of the blog is a shrine to the fantastic and ever-increasing vegan restaurants in the world.
